As we continue our summer journey into the Everyday Wisdom of Proverbs, I came across this powerful introduction to the book of Proverbs, written by Pastor, Author, and Scholar, Eugene Peterson. He sets the scene so well!
Many people think that what’s written in the Bible has mostly to do with getting people into heaven – getting right with God, saving their eternal souls. It does have to do with that, of course. But it is equally concerned with living on this earth – living well, living in robust sanity. In our Scriptures, heaven is not the primary concern, to which earth is a tagalong afterthought. “On earth as it is in heaven” is Jesus’ prayer.
Wisdom is the biblical term for this on-earth-as-it-is-in-heaven everyday living. Wisdom is the art of living skillfully in whatever actual conditions we find ourselves. It has virtually nothing to do with information as such, with knowledge as such. Wisdom has to do with becoming skillful in honoring our parents and raising our children, handling our money and conducting our sexual lives, going to work and exercising leadership, using words well and treating friends kindly, eating and drinking healthily, cultivating emotions within ourselves and attitudes toward others that make for peace.
Threaded through all these items is the insistence that the way we thinking of and respond to God is the most practical thing we do. In matters of everyday practicality, nothing, absolutely nothing, takes precedence over God.

It was a joy and a privilege for part of our team to spend time at the Okanagan Valley Pregnancy Care Center, one of our six key mission partners @ KGF. Thanks to Jeanne, Christine & Julie for sharing the impact of this ministry that has touched the lives of more than 800 women in the past 8 years. We had a tour, listened to stories, got a great big picture overview, and prayed for the team and all those who come through these doors.
If you are looking for a great place to invest your time, talent, or resources in, you can't do much better than the Pregnancy Care Center. More on their website here - http://ovpcc.com/
We are inviting you to join us in seeking wisdom from God, the Source of all wisdom! Proverbs has 31 chapters, and we’re inviting you you read and reflect on 1 chapter a day (even giving you weekends off!) That’s only 7 minutes a day, but the payoff is huge!
We encourage you to keep this bookmark handy (Download reading plan here) in your Bible as a reminder, and to check off the days you have read. And as you read, ask God to reveal His everyday wisdom to you more and more.
It would add to the experience if you have a journal handy, to write down your observations and thoughts as you read. We’re going to be sharing our reflections (and some of yours) on our website. Are you in? Great, let’s walk through this together! (All messages online here:)
As many of you are aware, Gardom Lake Bible Camp broke ground in June 2014 for a much needed expansion project which will double the size of the current Lodge, allowing for a new kitchen and chapel. The expansion will mean Gardom Lake can feed as many as it can sleeps, 250, as well as be able to have everybody in one space for worship / teaching / large group gatherings.
Every summer, Gardom Lake welcomes 1,200 plus campers, many of them from a non-Christian background. And every summer, hundreds come to know Jesus and many more grow deeper in their walk with him. The ministry also welcomes guests throughout the year for various retreats and gatherings.
KGF supports Gardom Lake’s ministry as one of our six key missions partners. And this August, we are going to invite you to give generously so the camp can have the money needed to put the roof on this expansion. Our goal is an ambitious one, the largest campaign we have ever undertaken. But we believe the KGF family can do it if we pull together. For Gardom Lake’s 40th year, and for this important building project, we are looking to raise $40,000! That seems overwhelming, but the history of this church family seems to suggest otherwise. I am excited and thankful to have an opportunity to be a Cabin Leader at Gardom Lake Bible Camp this summer. I've done it once before back in high-school at the camp I grew up going to as a kid. I've always wanted to do it again. It was a memorable and worthwhile experience the likes of which I am always craving more of.
However, I ended up being one of the blessed few young people who get themselves into a stable career right after high-school and I never again found myself with a summer free to spend in that way. So here I am over a decade later with a great reason to count my current work layoff as a blessing. I'm getting to do some of the things a person never makes time for in the natural flow of things. I'm certain God has given me this disruption with a purpose in mind and I look forward to watching it play out.
I'll be at Gardom Lake for two weeks, July 6-19. Please pray with me that God would be present in me and moving through me. May the Holy Spirit give me the words and the insights to make a difference in the lives of the kids and the other staff. May I be an example of the character of God lived out in the simple practical ways which I know can change people's lives.
