Introducing Interm Children's Ministries Director - Shari Laurie

Written by Mike Penninga on .

The board at KGF is excited to introduce Shari Laurie as our interm children’s ministries director, beginning August 2nd on a half-time basis (20 hours per week) for a 3 month contract. As a leadership team, we recognize the need to have a gifted leader overseeing this important ministry, especially as we move to two services in September. Shari and her husband Wayne have been a part of the KGF family for about a year, and their experience and giftings will be a blessing as they step into interm leadership of Kids Ministries. The discernment team will continue to process applicants for the full time children’s ministries pastor position. Here’s an intro to Shari, in her own words!

Shari LaurieI am more than excited to have the chance to work with the children and volunteers of KGF. I have been involved in leadership in Christian Education in several growing Sunday schools and have experience working with churches in meeting their needs for the right Sunday school and youth resources. I am currently winding down 20 years of teaching at Kelowna Christian school.

Wayne and I have been married for 40 years. We have two sons, Patrik & Mikel who found amazing young women to marry who share their love of Jesus. We have three beautiful grandchildren, Sam (5 1/2) Grace (2 1/2) and baby Zaiden (3 months) that keep both Wayne and I young.

I believe there is a vast difference between knowing about Jesus and knowing Jesus. My dream for the children's ministry at KGF is to be able to tell the story of God as told in the bible in such a manner that children will be so captivated with His son, Jesus that they will want to follow him throughout their lives. The knowing begins as children learn to recognize the unique voice of God amidst all the competing voices thrown at them each day. Helping children hear His voice and know His heart is the challenge of Sunday school.

Learning needs to be hands on. Children learn by doing. I have heard it said that it is a sin to bore a child with the gospel. I believe in a Sunday school that understands this and seeks to actively engage children in age appropriate learning through drama, music, storytelling, art, science, cooking and service projects. Children are unique and God has gifted them to learn so differently. Sunday schools need to present programs and events that model the best teaching methods available in fresh, exciting and unforgettable ways.
