Singleness - An Insider's Perspective

Written by Mike Penninga on .

We're tackling the topic of singleness as part of our "Game of Life: God Version" series at KGF.  Why does the church so often seem to misunderstand the world of the single?  One contributor I know passed along this helpful poem, documenting their journey over the past few years.  Join us February 28th for this message, and this new series.

Completely Single

Iʼve never been married.

Wipe that shocked look off your face.

I donʼt have a disease that needs to be cured, a serious flaw that needs to be fixed.

Iʼd be more acceptable to you if I had a failed marriage. Itʼs true, isnʼt it.

Why do you have this double standard about singleness?

You know the Bible, that it says being single is a good thing.

So why do you feel sorry for me?

Is it the sex thing?

The Bible says if you canʼt control yourself then youʼd better get married.

Hmmm ...

Iʼm not Snow White, in slumber mode till Prince Charming comes along.

Nor am I a freak, some desperate Quasimodo.

Iʼm not on a manhunt ... like a crazed addict.

Iʼm complete. Yes, without a man.

Yes, Iʼm different.

Is that why you fear me and exclude me, why your words sometimes wound me?

You know so little about me.

I have a rich, interesting life.

I have history.

I try to walk with God and serve Him.

I work.

I create.

I learn.

I travel.

I play.

I have a few good friends - I donʼt want a crowd of acquaintances.

I am a beautiful child of God, blessed to be single.

“Single” is His plan for me.

My request?

Beware of that little word yet, as in, “Oh, youʼre not married yet?”

Donʼt be scared to befriend me ...  Iʼm not after your spouse.

And donʼt tell me that Mr. Right will come along some day ... He has.
