Rob Rob KGF Church

Our family first attended church in Kelowna for about a year, when I was six, but mainly for social reasons, and we really didn’t hear much about Jesus, or understand how important He is. I lived selfishly before choosing to follow Christ and commit my life to His teachings and His will for my life. I used to be motivated by looking at any situation and asking what was in it for me.

My parents started attending First Baptist Church in 1975 in Vernon after being deeply hurt by family, and about a year later made decisions for Jesus. The positive changes in them, including being more family focused, caring, loving, compassionate and helpful, led my sister and me to receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior in 1978.

I became more others focused, pursued excellence at school, in my hobbies, and hungered for the Word of God. I tried to avoid evil in choosing my friends, and avoided the wrong crowd.

I attended Trinity Western College for a year and a half after high school. I had too heavy a course load in my second year and became quite ill, eventually withdrawing. I thank God for surrounding my with Godly and encouraging Christians. The scriptures became very real for me, including Romans 8:28, and have guided my life since. God brought me through all of it and I spent the next six years in post-secondary education, graduating from UBC with a Geology degree in 1991.

After a decade in various geological exploration jobs, and the tragic death of my older, believing sister, God brought me back to Kelowna. From 2001 - 2007, it was great to be a support to my parents, and have them there for me as well. A regular Wednesday night Bible study at Evangel also gave me spiritual strength and direction during these years. It was through a couple who attended this group that I was introduced to my beautiful and wonderful wife Diane and her young son, Dominion. God answered all our prayers, and the prayers of many other when Diane and I were married in July, 2008.

A verse that really speaks to me is Jeremiah 29:11, “ ‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope.’”

In tough times in my life, this verse reminds me of the compassion and ever present help Jesus gives. As a believer, I’ll always have a future and a hope.
