The following entry is from Josh Smith, one of KGF's worship leaders. I've asked them to take some time to introduce themselves to you via the web. Pastor Mike.
My name is Joshua Smith (most call me Josh), and I want to share a little about who I am and where I come from. Well, here I go...
I was born and raised in Halifax Nova Scotia for 21ish years of my life(Actually, West Chezzetcook, but no one knows where that is). I was so lucky to have been raised there and wake up to the sound of the ocean in the distance most every day, I wouldn't be surprised if, subconsciously, that is why I am so passionate about God and his creation and bringing others into that wonder and awe.
I accepted Jesus into my heart when I was 16, I mean REALLY accepted him as my saviour, my master, my everything. I remember saying a prayer when I was younger, but I didn't really grasp the fullness of what I was praying.
Since 16, God has brought me through a lot of heartache, joy, pain... you name the emotion, I experienced it. I am so thankful to have this relationship with a God who loves me unconditionally.
I am blessed to have such amazing parents who raised me completely both physically and spiritually. My love/pursuit of God is because of their constant wisdom and discipline, without their input and guidance I would not be the man I am today.
I have two brothers Daniel and Chris. Being the youngest in the family meant lots of "lets-test-things-out-on-Josh days", so I had a few bruises and bumps in my younger years! Besides that, I love my family with all my heart and am thankful for their love and friendship.
Where do I begin, God used my wife to speak to me and bring me back to true and pure worship. I was in a broken season of my life and needed refreshment and a friend. God sent me Sarah. I will save Sarah for another time, I can talk about her forever! I love my wife!!
My passion for music is tough to explain or convey to another person. People often ask, "why do you like music so much?", and I just kind of blurt out a whole bunch of things I like about music in one sentence because I cant paint that kind of picture in just one sentence!
Since I have more than a sentence, I will try to explain my love for music, wish me luck!
Since the day I was born, I have had this unexplainable desire to make music, weather it was singing with my dad, or even harmonizing with the vacuum cleaner, I always found ways to make music with my surroundings.
For me, there is something beautiful about waking up with a song in my heart, from God and making music to Him, EVERYDAY! As I had said, living by the ocean made for very intimate times of song writing and personal worship, the ocean is so powerful and awesome, and I mean awesome in the true sense of the word. I believe that God has given me this passion and gift for music to share with my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. We all have gifts that need to be shared, together we are a wonderful body that is made to worship our Lord and Saviour
From teaching guitar and vocal to leading worship in Nashville (thats another story) I believe that God has placed me in those situations to sharpen my gifts and bring me to where I am today.
Long story short, I made my way from Halifax to Banff, Banff to Halifax, Halifax to Nashville, Nashville to Halifax, Halifax to Banff and finally Banff to Kelowna and of course Kelowna to Kelowna Gospel Fellowship. (with a few stops in between them all). PHEW!!
"What does KGF have to do with any of this?" you might ask. Well, Kelowna Gospel Fellowship has been a place of refreshment for me, a place of community, a place of family. My wife Sarah and me had been searching for a place to belong since we moved here a couple years ago but could not really find a place to call home. We began attending KGF in May/June of 2009, we had heard about this place, actually I had lead worship once a few years before and forgot how great it was. Ever since Sarah and I have continued to come to KGF. KGF is the spark that has ignited my passion for worship once again, I have learned so much already from certain folks. We (Sarah and I) have grown so much spiritually and have remembered our love for generational worship.
There is something special about worshiping God together, all generations.
Having led with Pastor Mike in the past, I am so thankful to have been given this opportunity to serve under him again. Having true, passionate, responsive times of worship make me wake up with those songs in my heart.
I am excited for the future of Kelowna Gospel Fellowship and I am blessed to be part of a movement of God!
I will stop there. Come and say hello if you want to know more me and music, we could grab a coffee, I don't like coffee but just say Iced Tea and you have my full attention. Now I don't mean like fake Iced Tea, I mean, real tea, iced, delicious!
Anyways, I am rambling. So that is me, me the short version...Mini me maybe? Ok that was ridiculous.
Chat with Y'all soon!
